We call an assembly to mobilize against the layoffs of Uber Eats and against the exploitation of delivery platforms. Despite laws and sentences, these companies continue to systematically exploit riders by forcing them to work in unsafe working conditions, with false self-employment contracts and miserable piece wages.
In July, the dismissal of 8,000 Uber Eats riders who now find themselves without work, without unemployment and with the risk of losing their residence permit. The reason for the closure of the company completes the picture, openly declared by the Uber representative at the hearing in the Lombardy Region, namely the unexpected profits, not as high as they had hoped. This translated means that they failed to exploit the workers as much as they would have liked.
This is a dangerous attitude that could easily be replicated by other delivery companies in the future. In fact, we already see the first signs: due to the enormous amount of riders who flocked to other platforms after Uber’s massive dismissal, Glovo has further reduced pay, bringing the basic rate of an order to 1.12 euros.
