Volcanoes, glaciers, geysers, fossils, stalactites, salt flats, stars, asteroids, pyroclastic rocks, petroglyphs, coral, bradyseism, minerals, ammonites, obsidians, dinosaur footprints.

They might seem like the ingredients of a fantastic journey, similar to the one undertaken by the protagonists of Jules Verne’s novel who, crossing the underground, discovered an imaginary world made of underground oceans, giant mushrooms and fantastic animals.

However, imagination is not needed here. Because, as Albert Einstein said “Everything you can imagine, nature has already created.” A nature so rich that it is practically impossible to know it all.

PLANET EARTH WEEK, the widespread national festival of geosciences, is dedicated every year to the pleasure of getting to know it better to understand and respect it, which this year it will be held from 1st to 8th October and includes dozens and dozens of geo-events which include underground trekking, astronomical tours, archaeological excursions, trips along streams, visits to naturalistic oases normally closed to the public, conferences, activities in schools.

Many events of different types, but all aimed at making our territory known to the general public through its extraordinary geological, environmental and naturalistic heritage, to understand that geosciences are part of our everyday life and play a fundamental role for the sustainable development of our country on an environmental, economic and social level.

Basilicata will also be among the protagonists of the 11th edition of Planet Earth Week.

Planet Earth Week promotes cultural tourism, sensitive to environmental values, spread throughout the Italian territory, which highlights both our most spectacular natural resources, and the lesser-known, but no less fascinating ones: those that we are lucky enough, often without knowing it, to have right on our doorstep.
