The funeral of Antonino Donato, known to all as Nino, will take place tomorrow at 4pm at the Church of Ganzirri, the 29-year-old from Messina who died yesterday afternoon at the port of Salerno in an accident at work where another colleague from Messina was injured and underwent surgery at hospital in Salerno on his legs (his condition – according to what we learn – is not life-threatening although the prognosis remains reserved and the doctors will express their opinion only in the next few hours.
Donato, deck officer of the Caronte&Tourist, was on duty on the Messina-Salerno route. According to initial reconstructions (the Salerno prosecutor’s office opened an investigation without ordering an autopsy) the two men, the First Officer and the Second Officer on duty on the Cartour Delta ship in the early afternoon of yesterday were overwhelmed while they were on the ground by a port company tractor which – according to initial reconstructions – maneuvered in reverse on a port quay during commercial operations. The judiciary who acquired the images of what happened will have to establish whether the accident was caused by a malfunction of the fifth wheel (the piece of steel that connects the trailer to the conductor) with the mobile part, which caused the trailer to come uncoupled and the accident or from reversing.
Donato’s body arrived in Messina on board the Telepass ship at 3.30pm today accompanied throughout the crossing by the sound of sirens. Tomorrow during the funeral the sirens of the ferries will sound again.
