Blitz in Piazza di Spagna, Last Generation activists pour black liquid into the Barcaccia

Blitz by Last Generation activists in Piazza di Spagna, in the heart of Rome. Black liquid poured into the Barcaccia fountain.

Blitz of the activists of Last generationwho today, Saturday 1 April, poured black liquid into the Barcaccia fountain to Piazza di Spagna, in the heart of Rome. The water inside the fountain is currently colored black. Activists explain that it is a charcoal-based liquid.

“If seeing this black water upsets you, it is because, like us, you recognize how precious what we are losing is. All official reports, even those from government sources, denounce that government policies are insufficient to contain global warming to 1.5°C and are instead leading us straight towards a catastrophic increase of at least 2.5°C. This means that extreme events will make our lands uninhabitable. It means that desertification and drought will skyrocket, causing uncontrolled migration. It means that all our economic and social balances will collapse”, reads a note from Ultima Generazione.

“There is only one way to stop this race towards collective suicide: to stop emissions related to fossil fuels. With this action we want to ask the Government to stop investing in environmentally harmful subsidies. With this action we urge you not to resign yourselves to this death sentence,” declared the perpetrators of the blitz

Last Generation shares in Rome

They started with traffic blocks on the Grande Raccordo Anulare, but the last three actions of the Last Generation activists first targeted the headquarters of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, then the Van Gogh exhibition and finally Palazzo Madama, the seat of the Senate.

On January 2, 2023, a group of boys and girls reached the Senate and threw orange paint against the facade.

On November 4, 2022, activists threw vegetable soup at the painting Van Gogh’s “The Sower” inside Palazzo Bonaparte, which in this period is hosting an exhibition of the Dutch painter.

A few days earlier, on November 16, the boys had carried out a raid on the Cassa Depositi e Prestiti headquarters, smeared with orange paint. “”Italy is the sixth investor in the world of public money in fossil fuels and it is precisely the Cassa depositi e prestiti that insures these devastating investments”, the reasons for the protest.
