Marcus Strickland • Twi-Life
In partnership with Jazzus
La Comédie is hosting three concerts as part of the Sunnyside Festival organized by Jazzus: three high-flying evenings dedicated to jazz in all its forms and colors.
Tenor and soprano saxophonist Marcus Strickland, originally from Miami, has been active in the jazz scene since the 1990s, playing with artists such as Roy Haynes and Jeff “Tain” Waits.
The magazine DownBeat named him Rising Star on Tenor Saxophone in 2010 and Rising Star on Soprano Saxophone in 2008. The Reader’s Poll you magazine JazzTimes named him Best New Artist in 2006. Marcus Strickland placed third in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 2002.
His band and conceptual project, Twi-Life, explores the connection and intersection of jazz and hip-hop, drawing inspiration from J. Dilla’s aesthetic of complexity, “drum intoxication,” and tonal nuance. Strickland serves as a beat maker, composer, and saxophonist on these projects.
