In recent days, the news that a asteroid a name was given in honor of the Italian singer Annalisa. In particular, the space object was named “(20014) Annalisa”. From the city of Rosaryin the province of Reggio Calabria, a clarification has been made regarding how this assignment was reached, that is, who is the author of the official request and to which body it was submitted.
“The asteroid named after Annalisa is born from the initiative of Dr. Antonino BrosioDelegate for Culture of the Municipality of Rosarno. Last March, Dr. Brosio officially requested theInternational Astronomical Union (IAU) to award an asteroid for artistic and cultural merit to the famous star and doctor of physics Annalisa Scarrone, known to all as Annalisa. On March 3, the request was sent to Dr. GW, secretary and member of the IAU Asteroid Evaluation Committee. Dr. Williams, based on the description provided by Brosio, and which we can now find on portals such as NASA’s JPL, accepted the nomination. Brosio informed Annalisa’s staff by email, who responded thanking him and communicating that the news would be passed on to the appropriate persons”, it is stated in the press release.
“On May 2, 2024, Dr. Williams informed Brosio that the proposal had passed to the final stage. Thus, on May 20, 2024, with bulletin number 7 of Volume 4, the International Astronomical Union officially attributed Asteroid 1991 RM29 to Annalisa. Brosio immediately informed Annalisa’s staff via the email contact used previously, but this time he did not receive any response, also because he had asked for the possibility of organizing a short public talk in Rosarno, when the famous star would be in Calabria for a concert, in order to deliver the certificate of attribution officially.”, it continues.
“We would like to point out that the news reported by national newspapers, which attributes the asteroid’s name to NASA, it’s wrong. NASA does not deal with the naming of asteroids, a task reserved exclusively to the International Astronomical Union. Therefore, the news is totally false and unfounded. It is true that the asteroid named after Annalisa is also visible on NASA channels, such as the famous site where you can see the orbits of the planets of our Solar System. However, this does not mean that NASA made this attribution. the request actually came from Rosarnoa small town in the south of Calabria, where scholars and researchers have appreciated the artistic and cultural value of Annalisa, and have therefore decided to request this important attribution”, is specified by the municipality of Rosarno.
“We thank all those who supported this initiative and we trust that these clarifications will help clarify the real dynamics of the events and that Annalisa’s staff will make a correction to what has been seen and read in recent days. We would be infinitely honored and happy to host Annalisa for a short public talk, in order to officially deliver the plaque relating to the attribution of the asteroid that has been specially prepared and we trust that it is a dream that can be realized”, concludes the statement.
