Isolation of Taranto: Everyone Against Salvini

The cancellation of the Frecciarossa to and from Rome has created a certain indignation among the citizens of Taranto, already strongly isolated compared to the other capitals of Puglia. On this point, some political and institutional representatives of the territory belonging to the most diverse groups have intervened.

At the local level, the opposition councilor Gianni Liviano has filed a motion so that the Council commits Mayor Melucci to activate a technical-political-union table with the Puglia Region, aimed at interacting with RFI to allow the Frecciarossa to Rome (TA-BA-FG-NA-RM section) to depart from the Ionian capital. Furthermore, Liviano asks to activate an Economic Table with the Government, aimed at making the transport system more efficient in the territory.

The President of the Chamber of Commerce of Brindisi – Taranto has taken a clear position, Vincenzo Cesareo, according to whom the circumstance is: “truly paradoxical”since “the Taranto area is defined as “strategic” for steel, for the Mediterranean Games, for aerospace and so on, but it does not deserve a banal fast connection to the Capital. Yet another, very serious problem for citizens, perpetually penalized in their right to mobility; for businesses, especially but not only tourism; for students; in a word, for the social evolution to which Taranto aspires”. Not only that. The local representative of the Chamber of Commerce asks “the other institutions, the representatives of businesses and workers, professionals, civil society to unite us in a constructive and effective protest”.

From Rome, the Senator’s attack is not surprising. Mario Turco (M5s), who underlines the absence of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salviniregarding an oral question filed on May 30 on the issue of the territorial isolation of Taranto. Salvini, according to the Vice President of the M5S, “pretends not to know that the Ionian capital is cut off from high-speed rail and airport connections” and “has even had the impudence to ignore the urgent need to modernize and secure the SS100, a real road of death”.

The intervention on this point by the Hon. is surprising – but not too much, considering the clashes at a national level between FdI and Lega. Dario Iaia (FdI), who has submitted a further question to the same Ministerto find out what “initiatives the competent ministry intends to undertake to overcome the summer difficulties faced by passengers and what structural initiatives will be adopted to provide the area with a better, more effective and efficient network”. The majority representative, regarding the suspension of the line for the summer months, specifies that: “ninety days in the middle of the tourist season generate economic damage to the area and significant inconvenience for travellers who have to reach the capital from Taranto, or vice versa”, but also “a very serious economic damage for all citizens, entrepreneurs, workers, freelancers, traders and artisans in the area”.

The city can only wait for a quick response from MIT.
