The survey on citizen safety concerned women between 14 and 70 years old: the national average is 6.4%

Harassment suffered outside the workplace: in the two-year period 2022-2023, 4.2% of women aged 14 to 70 in Basilicata were victims of it. This is what emerges from the survey by the National Institute of Statistics (Istat) on the safety of citizens carried out in the year 2022-2023 to process the data of a module dedicated to sexual harassment suffered in the workplace and non-sexual harassment suffered outside this context. In 2022-2023, Istat estimates that 13.5% of women aged 15-70, who work or have worked, have suffered sexual harassment at work during their entire lives (especially the youngest aged 15-24, 21.2%) and 2.4% of men aged 15-70. In particular, these include offensive looks, insults, indecent proposals, and even more serious acts such as physical harassment. Limited to the last three years preceding the 2022-2023 survey, the figures stop at 4.2% for women and 1% for men. However, harassment is also suffered outside the workplace: in the same reference period, 6.4% of women aged 14 to 70 and 2.7% of men of the same age were victims, as a result of the Italian average: “Just over half of this harassment occurs through the use of technology (email messages, chat or social media).” In relation to the phenomenon of harassment at work, however, this presents territorial differences, more for women than for men. For the former, the phenomenon is lower in the North-East (9.7%) while higher levels are found in the North-West (14.9%), followed by the Center, South and Islands, which all stand at around 14%. Looking at the regions, Piedmont prevails (20.3%), followed by Umbria (16.0%), Sicily (15.8%), Campania (15.7%) and Lazio (15.1%). A similar trend is also recorded in the case of men, but with a more marked presence of the Central regions (3.7% against the average value of 2.4%), on which the impact of Lazio weighs (5.3%).
