We are back to talking about mucilage in the sea of Rimini, a natural phenomenon that many years ago, in the late 80s, significantly plagued our territory, causing considerable damage to seaside tourism. In fact, the sea was affected by a proliferation of mucilage of unusual dimensions and this created a “carpet” of green mush that resulted in a collapse in the influx of tourists and a significant number of cancellations, especially from Germany, the main foreign tourist basin for the Rimini area.

Today the phenomenon, which has recurred due to high temperatures and rain, is causing critical issues for clam fishermen. In recent days, the Rimini Sea Workers cooperative is reporting the problem through some videos: the mucilage in fact puts the life of marine organisms at risk. There are no critical issues for tourism: beach operators invite people not to be influenced by any fake news.

“There are times when the mucilage makes its presence, actually discreet, we have no cancellations or complaints. A natural phenomenon, it has no contraindications on people’s health, but it is disappearing with the storms and currents“, explains Mauro Vanni, national president of Confartigianato Imprese Demaniali and seaside entrepreneur.

The rough sea due to northern currents will bring the long-awaited resolution to the problem, as Federico Antonioli of Centro Meteo Emilia Romagna points out: “The positive aspect is that in these days the sea will be rough due to northern currents and at least near the coast it should clean the slime, which in any case is not so invasive at the moment”.

“Mucilage does not represent a danger, and above all it is not an indication of poor health of our sea”he reiterates, and it is a phenomenon that derives “from the presence of algae, which are part of the marine environment and are facilitated by warm waters such as those we are recording in the recent period; if we add to this the frequent contributions of the rivers towards the northern Adriatic in recent months, which favor the blooming of algae, the game is done“.

“Anyway – concludes – they are at home, complaining about mucilage is a bit like complaining about jellyfish or sea nuts: they are always elements of the marine ecosystem with which in one way or another we have to coexist”.
