Evacuations continue in Cogne

The situation is improving in Cogne, in the Aosta Valley, where another 300 people are expected to be evacuated today after the 853 people airlifted downstream yesterday. Following the heavy rains on Saturday that isolated the town, work has begun to restore the road connection along the regional road. In the meantime, in Breuil Cervinia, work has continued on the disinsection of the Marmore torrent, which flooded on Saturday, and the activities of emptying the cellars of debris and water. Last night at the headquarters of the Regional Civil Protection in Aosta, the Rescue Coordination Center met with the President of the Region, Renzo Testolin, to take stock of the situation. The goal is to complete the data collection to deliver to Rome by Friday the documentation for the declaration of a state of emergency that will allow the Region to act urgently and with extraordinary powers, derogating from the laws and budget constraints. Above all, the Aosta Valley will be able to receive the first financial resources from the State to deal with the emergency. Additional funds will arrive at a later date to support those affected by the flood and for reconstruction activities.

Musumeci: “Road to Cogne not passable for a month”

“The first interventions are essentially linked, as established by the code, to those carried out by the Municipalities, such as restoring the roads and essential services. I fear that that artery which is important and strategic cannot be fixed and made passable in the space of a month”, explained the Minister of Civil Protection Nello Musumeci, to Sky TG24, regarding the damage caused by bad weather in the Aosta Valley, in particular in the area of Cogne and in the surrounding Municipalities.

The situation in Piedmont

There were over 50 interventions by firefighters in Turin and the surrounding areas after the storm that hit the city and several parts of the province yesterday. In Macugnaga, one of the towns in the province of Vco most affected by the wave of bad weather last weekend, cellars and homes are still being emptied of mud and gravel. “The Piedmont Region has naturally requested a state of emergency. Tomorrow there will be the Council of Ministers” and “we will evaluate the merits, both for what is the declaration of a state of emergency, which provides a more streamlined path for spending, and for the possible need for allocations”, said the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, responding to those who asked him if additional resources were planned for the damage caused by bad weather in Regions without special statutes, such as Piedmont.
