It’s a bit of a bolt from the blue in the world of mass distribution. The Carrefour group announced on Monday, July 1, the acquisition of 60 Cora hypermarkets from the Belgian group Louis Delhaize, which will change brand, as well as the 115 Match stores, which will keep their identity. This means that the two Cora stores in the Marne, located in La Neuvillette and Cormontreuil, will therefore become Carrefour stores, probably from October, bringing the number of hypermarkets of this brand to three in the city of coronations. No change, however, for the Match in Châlons.
Carrefour said it had obtained an exemption from the French Competition Authority to finalize this transaction at 1.05 billion euros. According to Carrefour, the 175 Cora and Match establishments represent 2.4% of the food distribution market and 22,000 workers. The group of Alexandre Bompard, which announced “the most important [acquisition] for Carrefour since the acquisition of Promodès” in 1999, will therefore retain its second place behind E. Leclerc and ahead of the Les Mousquetaires group. The CEO also specified that from October, “each Cora store that changes brand” will lower prices “by at least 10% on nearly 3,000 products”.
