Palio di Siena of July 2, 2024: the Giraffa wins the Provaccia

The race took place this morning, Tuesday 2nd July, with the horses leaving at 9 from the entrance of the Podestà Courtyard in Piazza del Campo, the Test (sixth round) of the Palio di Siena on July 2, 2024, Palio di Provenzano, the last appointment on the tuff of Piazza del Campo before this evening’s race.

Before the test, at 7.45, the external chapel of Palazzo Pubblico was celebrated Jockey’s Massofficiated by Cardinal Archbishop Augusto Paolo Lojudice.

It was the Contrada of the Giraffe to win the sixth test this morning which, as usual, was nothing more than a test for the horses (hence the name Provaccia).

With all the mounts confirmed this morning too, the ten Contrade took their places inside the ropes in thereverse order had by the horses to proceed to their assignment (ear order): Caterpillar, Wolf, Wave, Unicorn, Panther, Giraffe, Nicchio, Owl, Ram and Goose chasing.

During the dinners of the dress rehearsal yesterday evening the battle names of the two debuting jockeys were announced: the Bruco jockey, Mattia Chiavassait will be said Play; Gabriele PulighedduGiraffe’s jockey, will be called Granite.

• The first tryrun on Saturday 29 June at 7.45pm, was won by Contrada of the Nicchio with Elias Mannucci aka Turbine on Akida (go to the article).
• The second testrun on Sunday 30 June at 9am, was won by Contrada of the She-Wolf with Andrea Coghe aka Tempesta on Zenios. (go to the article).
• The third trialrun on Sunday 30 June at 7.45pm, was won by Contrada of the Wave with Carlo Sanna aka Brigante on Tabacco (go to the article).
• The fourth testrun on Monday 1st July at 9am, was won by Contrada of the Nicchio with Elias Mannucci aka Turbine on Akida (go to the article).
• The fifth testrun on Monday 1st July at 7.45pm, was won by Contrada of the Nicchio with Elias Mannucci aka Turbine on Akida shaken (go to the article).

In this Palio di Siena of July 2, 2024, characterized by many debutants, six among the horses and, at the moment, two among the jockeys (we remind you that the jockeys can be changed up until the moment of the scoring which takes place on the morning of the Palio after the Provaccia has been carried out), there are two pairs of Rival districts that face each other on the tuff of Piazza del Campo: Owl-Leocorno e Valdimontone-Nicchio.

In the lot of cavalli participants, there are only four who have already competed in the Palio, none of whom have been winners in their career: Tobacco (6 Palios run), Angel face (3 Palios run), Ungaros (2 Palios run), Summer (1 Palio race) NB the statistics do not take into account the current Palio. Instead, there are six horses making their debut on the tuff of Piazza del Campo: Akida, Ardeglina, Ares Elce, Brivido Sardo, Criptha and Zenios.

UPDATING

Career Day of the Siena Palio of July 2, 2024 will continue in the morning with the Jockeys’ Marking at the Town Hall (from that moment they can no longer be replaced) and in the afternoon with the blessing of the horses in the oratories of the ten participating Contrade.

Before the entrance of the Historical parade (or historical walk) in Piazza del Campo, scheduled for 16.50will be carried out, at 16.45the traditional display with the charge of the Carabinieri troop on horseback. At 19 the horses will come out from the Entrance of the Podestà Courtyard of the Palazzo Pubblico and it will finally be Palio.
