CARPI. He’s been pestering her for months, he haunted her bombarding her with messages and phone calls and he defamed her by sending messages on social media that offended her reputation – in which he referred to her as a prostitute – to her friends and family. She was the carer of his (seriously ill) sister who was sentenced yesterday to one year and two months.

The civil party in yesterday’s abbreviated trial was the woman, a 30-year-old Georgian, and her new partner, who at a certain point also became the target of the 66-year-old. The two were assisted by the Bologna lawyer Gino Moroni.

The accusations

The contested facts occurred in Carpi approximately from autumn 2021 to January 2023. The young woman had recently moved to Italy and she had started working as a carer in 2019 in the home of the seriously ill sister of the accused, in Carpi: initially everything seemed to be going smoothly but at a certain point the 66-year-old began to harass the woman. Almost every day he sent her messages containing sexual advances and bombarded her with phone calls. Then when they were together inside the home of his sister, the 66-year-old he approached the victim seeking physical contact. He also did it by caressing her hair, making sexual advances. The list of charges hanging over him was very long. In general, the man was harassing and sometimes addressed the 30-year-old by making animal noises (particularly that of a pig) and making gestures with his hands that clearly alluded to sexual intercourse. All this while mocking, once again, the victim. In the very early stages, also due to difficulties with the Italian language, she had not fully understood the seriousness of the words that the man was addressing her. When she understood, she left home. But after the move, and after the 66-year-old discovered that the young woman had started a “close” friendship with a man, he began to defame her on social media and, as mentioned, he also took it out on him (who in fact joined the proceedings as a civil party). At the last hearing he had been asked to plea bargain but, at the end of the hearing, the 66-year-old took a photo of the two victims and published it on social media, writing phrases that the two victims considered defamatory.

They have therefore reported him for defamation for this episode too. The judge rejected the plea bargaining request and yesterday the summary conviction arrived. The 66-year-old will have to pay an immediately enforceable provisional sum of 5 thousand euros to the woman and of one thousand euros to her friend.
