Viterbo – Wild boar emergency, put them to sleep to capture and then kill them. It is the only solution at the moment to limit the presence of animals in the city, the project has been discussed for weeks.
Marco Nunzi, Viterbo 2020 city councilor who is closely following the issue, is confident about the start. “We hope – hopes Nunzi – to be able to start as early as August”.
Containing wild boars, often entire families, looking for food even in the city center, is proving to be a difficult task. “Narcosis for subsequent capture can be a solution, but there are still some steps to take. At the moment it seems to be the only way.
The best thing would be to close the circle, keeping the animals in Viterbo, avoiding calling an external company”. Because the project involves hitting the wild boars with a sleeping pill. In the “bullet” there is also a GPS device for finding them. Then there are the cages.
Once captured, it must be taken to a previously arranged place. If it were in Viterbo everything would be easier.
“A hub,” explains Nunzi, “where they can arrive and then decide whether to slaughter or incinerate them.” Because the solution to the problem is not pleasant.
“Nobody wants to kill animals,” Nunzi points out, “it’s unpleasant and it’s not right, but unfortunately we are forced to, it’s a necessity.”
There would be a way to mitigate a difficult choice: “If we can make sure that the meat of the killed animals can be used – explains Nunzi – for those who need it, all of this would at least make sense”.
The ASL will evaluate, while for everything else: “Technical times are needed for the various assignments, I hope that it will be possible to bring forward the start of the project even before September, perhaps a month earlier”.
