A stretch with the lights still off

The lights are back on on the Corato-Trani provincial road. And this time, fortunately, it is not a metaphor.

In fact, for a few days now, technicians have been working along the junction that leads from Trani to Corato to intervene on the systems and change the lighting fixtures. The first street lamps were turned on already on Sunday evening at the overpass. The others are still off, but it is hoped that they will be able to return to working as soon as possible.

It goes without saying that light is synonymous with better visibility and therefore greater safety. Even more so along this stretch of the provincial road – under the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan City of Bari – located on a curve and in which the lane to take the overpass and the one through which vehicles coming from Corato head towards Trani are located.

In general, as is well known, the entire provincial road – now unsuitable to handle the current volume of traffic – presents obvious safety problems. The last, terrible, fatal accident dates back to last February, which claimed the 17th victim in the last 17 years, as demonstrated by the statistics of Cremss-Asset, the Regional Monitoring Center for Road Safety, and by the news contained in the archives of CoratoLive.it.

It’s all the fault of a lethal mix generated by the road surface in terrible conditions (especially in the stretch between Corato and the motorway toll booth junction), by the carriageway with only one lane in each direction, by the numerous at-grade intersections and, obviously, by the imprudence of drivers and the failure to respect the speed limits and the double continuous line that prohibits overtaking.

In recent months, the Province BAT, after yet another fatal accident, announced interventions to improve the safety of the provincial road and included the road surface redevelopment project in the three-year plan for public works. The order of engineers of the sixth province of Puglia also offered its support to the provincial infrastructure sector for the identification of critical issues and the planning of interventions on this and other roads under the jurisdiction of the province. Developments are awaited.
