«We started discussing. She told me I was too dependent, too clingy. She wanted to move on, she was creating new relationships, she was dating another guy. I screamed that it wasn’t right, that I needed her, that I would kill myself. She got out of the car shouting: Leave me alone.”

A few minutes after the stabbings: «I remember that she was facing up towards me. She protected herself with her arms where I was hitting her.”

It’s the story that Filippo Turetta, who confessed to the femicide of Giulia Cecchettin, did so in front of the deputy prosecutor Andrea Petroni in the only interrogation held so far. Step by step, Turetta put in order his version of the events of that evening of November 11, 2023 between Vigonovo and Fossò.

A document, the minutes, revealed for the first time on Friday evening, June 21, during the Quarto Grado broadcast. On July 15th Turetta will be before the judges for the first time.

«I gave her, I don’t know, about ten, twelve, thirteen blows with the knife. I wanted to hit her in the neck, shoulders, head, face and then arms. She was facing up at me. She protected herself with her arms where I was hitting her. The last stab I gave her was on her eye. It was as if he wasn’t there anymore. I put her in the back seat and we left.”

«He wanted to live without me»

“I killed her because she wanted to live without me.” This is how Turetta motivated the killing of his ex-girlfriend on the evening of November 11, 2023, after having spent the afternoon together shopping and then having dinner at the Nave de Vero shopping center in Marghera.

Then the return journey with the car which stops in a car park 150 meters from Giulia’s house.

«I wanted to give her a gift, a little monster monkey. With me I had a backpack that contained other gifts: another stuffed monkey, a small lamp, a children’s illustration book. She refused to take it”, Turetta put on record, “We started arguing. He told me I was too dependent, too clingy with her. She wanted to move forward, she was creating new relationships, she was ‘feeling’ with another guy.”

«The knife taken from the seat»

«I screamed that it wasn’t right, that I needed her, that I would commit suicide», the report continues, «She replied firmly that she would not return with me. She and ‘she got out of the car, shouting ‘You’re crazy, fuck you, leave me alone. I was very angry. Before I go out too, I took a knife from the back pocket of the driver’s seat».

«I chased her, I grabbed her arm holding the knife in my right hand. She screamed ‘help’ and fell. I leaned down on her, gave her a smack on the arm, I seem to remember that the knife broke immediately afterwards. I then grabbed her shoulders while she was on the ground. She resisted. She hit her head. I put her in the back seat.”

«Giulia felt like she wasn’t there anymore, I put her in the back seats and we set off. My clothes were quite dirty with her blood.” Turetta abandoned his ex-girlfriend’s body in an isolated area near Lake Barcis and then fled by car to Germany.

The knot of premeditation

The young man confesses but tries to convince the magistrate that there was no premeditation. «I always kept the scotch in the car, the knives also because I had suicidal thoughts».

The theme of escape. «This – he says, referring to some images shown to him – is me at the petrol station in Cortina. I changed the clothes stained with blood with others I had in the car. In the car I always have a change of clothes, blankets, something to eat or drink.”

“I tried to commit suicide”

«I took the road to Barcis, I stopped at a point where there were no houses, I stayed there for a while I even tried to suffocate myself with a bag but even after tying it with tape I couldn’t do it. I thought that if I smoked and drank sambuca it would be easier to commit suicide, but instead I vomited in the car.”

«So I turned the phone back on, I was looking for news that would make me feel bad enough to have the courage to commit suicide but I read that my parents hoped to find me still alive and this had the opposite effect: I resigned myself to never committing suicide again and being arrested».
