An exhibition in two locations, starting June 21st. The beautiful summer of Mart. The collaboration between the Mart of Rovereto, the Municipality of Villa Lagarina and the Parco Guerrieri Gonzaga is renewed for the third year. The new edition of La bella estate del Mart is part of the Galassia Mart cultural project, with which the Rovereto museum supports exhibition projects in the Trentino area, which this year makes use of the contribution of Il Cigno GG Edizioni.

The works of contemporary artists Ettore de Conciliis and Umberto Mastroianni are on display in the spaces of Palazzo Libera and the nearby Parco Guerrieri Gonzaga. Discounted ticket to the Park for those who show up with a Mart ticket (and vice versa).

The works of Ettore de Conciliis and Umberto Mastroianni return to dialogue after their 2014 meeting at the Estorick Collection in London, exhibited alongside the archaeological finds of Ostia Antica in the Roman Ostia exhibition. Ancient Ruins, Modern Art.
Now after ten years, the two artists are once again presented together – apparently distant yet equally vital in their relationship with the primordial elements of our existence – in the exhibition Water, light, fire. Ettore de Conciliis, Umberto Mastroianni presented to the public on Saturday 22 June in the spaces of Palazzo Libera and in the Guerrieri Gonzaga Park at Villa Lagarina, curated by Giordano Bruno Guerri and Denis Isaia, from an idea by Vittorio Sgarbi, President of the Mart, and Lorenzo Zichichi, Il Cigno GG Editions.

In the large canvases by de Conciliis exhibited at Palazzo Libera, “refraction of the state of mind of the beholder” according to Isaia, the main theme is, as always, water, and therefore the landscape investigated through the mirrors of water and a light sometimes flickering, other times serene, other times discovered in the nocturnal reflections”.

And light returns to express emotions even in landscapes of smaller dimensions in which de Conciliis momentarily puts aside the liquid element to offer us lyrical and almost intimate environments and landscapes, in which the total absence of humanity always makes the spectator unique and absolute protagonist: this is the case in Fine estate, The Woods and La strada delle Ginestre from the early nineties, but also in the recent La Quercia and the grandiose Night comes on, for Leonardo Cohen, both from 2024.

The exhibition continues in the spaces of the Giardino Guerrieri Gonzaga. In the ancient Sala delle Botti and in the park there are large-format reproductions of the Portella della Ginestra Memorial, a Land Art project – the first in Italy – with which de Conciliis commemorated in 1979-1980, with the collaboration of the painter Rocco Falciano and the architect Giorgio Stockeò, the Portella della Ginestra massacre. “It is on the theme of the monument – writes Isaia – that the de Conciliis memorial meets a nucleus of sculptures by Umberto Mastroianni” painter and above all sculptor whose bronzes, first figurative and then increasingly abstract, and the great monuments remain famous linked above all to the Resistance.

Now it is the fire that forges the material that excavates emotions.

“Life comes from water, de Conciliis has known this long before and much better than biologists” ventures Giordano Bruni Guerri in the exhibition catalog of il Cigno GG Edizioni, for the paperback series entitled to Lea Mattaraella; “try to look beneath the soft and calm colors of its water surfaces and you will find the frenzy of life of multicolored algae and bacteria ready to form butterflies and dinosaurs, moray eels and Avellino moray eels”.
A vitality that we find in the frenzy of the shapes and colors of Mastroianni’s sculpture and in the struggle that the artist seems to have engaged with the material which seems to be the struggle for the life of those who lived through the war: pulsations, convulsions, rotations, energy of creation.
The same one that perhaps hides the de Coinciliis water.

Water, light, fire. Ettore de Conciliis, Umberto Mastroianni, open until 27 October, is an exhibition by Il Cigno GG Edizioni Roma with Mart di Rovereto, Municipality of Villa Lagarina and Parco Guerrieri Gonzaga and is part of the “La bella estate del Mart” program.

The entrance ticket to Parco Guerrieri Gonzaga is discounted for those who show up at the cash desk with the Mart ticket. Conversely, the Park ticket entitles you to a reduction on the Mart ticket. As always, the Mart ticket includes a visit to the Depero House of Futurist Art and the Galleria Civica of Trento within two months of issue.
