In the midst of a water emergency, farmers and a group of citizens report that the water from the Sosio Verdura river ends up in the sea. They reached the stream which despite the little rain carries several liters of water per second which is not used. The farmers of Ribera have made a video where you can see the water being wasted.

The river

The Gammauta crossing, on the Sosio river, between the Sicani Mountains, under the responsibility and management of Enel which produces electricity with the water and when from the small reservoir of around half a million cubic metres, to prevent it from overflowing, it is sent with a disposable underground pipeline into the sea, near Poggio Diana. The farmers pay their weight in gold to the reclamation consortium that takes care of distribution in the area, but in this situation, wasting so much water, in their view, is considered sacrilege.

The Castello dam plays a fundamental role in the supply of water for the irrigation of agricultural land, including vineyards, olive groves and land intended for livestock farming, contributing to the livelihood of a population of approximately 150,000 inhabitants distributed across 14 municipalities. This water resource is also essential for the production and marketing of excellent products. Among these, Ribera oranges, Bivona peaches and the famous strawberries stand out, as well as the production of highly prized oil derived from local olive groves.

The request of the city councilors

A few weeks ago, the municipal councilors of Ribera had asked the Region, in a long letter, for the infrastructural interventions necessary to facilitate the interconnection of the existing water networks and, at the same time, to promote the modernization of the fundamental structures. This would ensure regular distribution of water, minimize losses and promote sustainable use of available water resources. Furthermore, again according to the councilors, there would be a need for a census and the possible immediate reactivation of the existing wells in the municipal territory potentially capable of supplying adequate quantities of water for drinking and irrigation use.
