Lucca, the FdI councilor asks for a minute of silence for the election of Ilaria Salis

“It seems necessary to me to have a minute of silence, perhaps 60 seconds would be enough, for Salis’s election to the European elections.” Embarrassment and astonished faces, last night, in the Lucca city council, due to the public request of the Fratelli d’Italia city councilor Laura Da Prato, who is also president of the assembly’s Culture commission.

The explicit reference is to the success in the elections of Ilaria Salis, the Italian activist and teacher who in February 2023 was arrested in Hungary on charges of attacking neo-Nazis during a far-right demonstration in Budapest. The statement by the Melonian municipal councilor, halfway between a provocation and a joke, compares Salis’ electoral affirmation to a mourning, probably also in relation to the freedom that would be granted to her – given that she is under arrest – as a consequence of the election.

Laura Da Prato expressed her hope right at the beginning of the session, in the recommendation phase: the president of the municipal council Enrico Torrini, who belongs to a civic list of the centre-right municipal majority, who immediately rejected the request, but in the the brawl broke out in the chamber, with protests from the opposition benches, in particular from the Left Councilor Daniele Bianucci. At that moment the mayor of Lucca Mario Pardini, a centre-right civic figure, was not in the Council.
