when, where and how you vote

On Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June 2024 we will vote for the election of the 76 members of the European Parliament belonging to Italy, for the election of the council and the president of the regional council in Piedmont, for the annual round of administrative elections in the ordinary statute regions and in the special statute regions of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Sardinia and Sicily. The polls will be open Saturday 8 June from 3pm to 11pm and Sunday 9 June from 7am to 11pm. 51 million 198 thousand 828 citizens are interested in voting for the European elections, i.e. the total number of those registered on the electoral lists according to the data of the latest survey on the 15th day before the elections.

The administrative elections concern 3,520 municipalities in the ordinary statute regions, 114 municipalities in Friuli Venezia Giulia, 27 municipalities in Sardinia and 37 municipalities in Sicily. The possible second round of balloting for the direct election of the mayor, which involves municipalities with a population exceeding 15 thousand inhabitants, will take place on Sunday 23 and Monday 24 June: the polls will be open from 7 am to 11 pm on Sunday and from 7am to 3pm on Monday. The possible turn of ballot it will not concern the municipalities voting in Friuli Venezia Giulia, all with a population of less than 15 thousand inhabitants.

The unofficial data on turnout and results relating to the European elections, the regional elections in Piedmont, the ordinary round of administrative elections in the ordinary statute regions and the administrative elections in Sardinia will be available online – by the central directorate for electoral services of the Ministry of the Interior – on Eligiblethe integrated system for archiving and disseminating election results, and onapp Eligendo Mobile (Android version; iOS version).

Voters must go to vote in possession of a valid identity document and voter card. In the event of loss or running out of spaces for stamping on the card, it can also be requested on voting days at the electoral office of the municipality where you are registered on the electoral lists.

As regards the European elections, it is possible to vote for only one list, and separate voting is not permitted. The voter can draw a mark on the symbol of the chosen list, even without indicating candidates. The names of any candidates chosen must be indicated on the lines printed to the right of the symbol, writing the surname or the name and surname in case of homonymy. You can express from one to three preferences. In the case of two or three preferences, they must refer to candidates of different genders, otherwise the second or second and third preferences will be cancelled. Candidates must belong to the voted list.

The lists of candidates presented for each constituency and the symbols of the parties, movements or organized political groups can be consulted online, as well as the mock-ups of the electoral cards, of a different color for each of the 5 electoral districts into which the national territory is divided. Tariff concessions are provided for rail, sea, motorway and air travel for Italian citizens resident in Italy or abroad who go to the electoral registration location (or nearby) to exercise their right to vote.

There are also specific provisions for voting with a special or home procedure, which certain categories of citizens can avail of: among these, respectively, patients in hospitals or nursing homes, those admitted to retirement homes and drug addicts hospitalized in communities, prisoners (Dait circular no. 50/2024), and voters admitted to voting at home as they are “affected from very serious infirmities, such that removal from the home in which they live is impossible” or “suffering from serious infirmities who find themselves in conditions of continuous and vital dependence on electro-medical equipment such as to prevent their removal from the home” (Dait circular n.30/2024).

This year, non-resident students can, for the first time and only for the European elections, vote for the lists and candidates of their territorial constituency of origin without having to return to the municipality of residence. There are 23,734 students who have requested to make use of this new voting method – introduced on an experimental basis (article 1-ter of legislative decree n.7/2024, converted by law n.38/2024).
