Regional council of lay aggregations

The particular historical moment, troubled by strong international tensions and devastating war conflicts and by dangerous sovereignist and populist dynamics, makes the next electoral appointment for the renewal of the European Parliament full of meaning and full of implications for the essence and the future itself of European Union. Urged by the event, we thought it appropriate to express a reflection that comes from the bottom of our hearts, offering it with simplicity of mind to those, voters and elected officials, who will have the benevolence to welcome it“.

Thus the Regional Council of Lay Aggregations presenting the “Public reflection document on the next European elections” uploaded yesterday on the sector website (www.cralsicilia.it).

Reflection – explains Cral again – it adds to the interventions and appeals that various associations, institutions, bodies… have already made. A sign of a common feeling, which intends to catalyze attention on the electoral event to give it the right weight“.

The reflection is the fruit of what the Cral board of directorswith its current Secretary Stefano Vitello, and with the contribution of Alfio Di Pietro, his predecessor.

The Document, opened by a general introduction, consists of five paragraphs which deal with: Respect for human dignity; Protection of the family and human life from conception to natural death; Peace; Development of democracy; Migrants.

The text closes with the Conclusions which recall some of Pope Francis’ declarations on the Europe that dreams. “It’s this “dream” – we read in the Document signed by the Regional Council of Lay Aggregations – which we intend to cultivate so that the process of political and democratic consolidation of the European Union proceeds quickly and without failure, which aspires and is called to be a community of values, a community linked by a real bond of solidarity and subsidiarity. The European institutions, in fact, risk being or becoming “a body without a soul”, a sum of selfish and sometimes conflicting interests, if they are not enlivened by a real European spirit of brotherhood. It is this “dream” that we wish to build together, making our own and repeating the appeal for trust and hope in the future that the Bishops of Sicily addressed to Sicilian citizens for an active and responsible vote“.
