TRIESTE Police checks on the borders between Italy and Slovenia will be extended for another six months. This was announced by the Interior Ministry. At the same time, Slovenia also announces the extension of border controls with Croatia and Hungary.

The Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi he had a telephone conversation with his Slovenian counterpart Bostjan Poklukar. At the center of the phone call was the decision to maintain controls along the common border for a further six months, also following the increased level of attention in relation to the Italian Presidency of the G7.

“As always – declared Minister Piantedosi – the control methods will be implemented in such a way as to cause the least possible impact on cross-border circulation and the traffic of goods”.

“For our part, there is a desire to share effective solutions that allow us to return to free and safe circulation. Our technical offices – he concluded – are working in the right direction, we have built a virtuous cooperation model and it is planned soon a new trilateral meeting between Italy, Croatia and Slovenia”.

Slovenia has also decided to extend it for six months border controls with Croatia and Hungary, after Italy announced mirror measures regarding the Italian-Slovenian border. This was reported by the Slovenian news agency Sta.

Announcing Ljubljana’s decision today, the Slovenian Interior Minister Bostjan Poklukar said the checks will continue to help fight crime and will have as little impact as possible on local people.

Furthermore, Poklukar said he did not expect major problems during the summer season, as there were none during the winter holidays. Border controls will remain in place until December 21st.

Croatia, Hungary and the European Commission have already been informed of the extension of border controls decided by Ljubljana.
