We stayed at this eco-hotel in Tuscany that fights drought by desalinating sea water

We were on the coast of the Tuscan Maremma, in Follonica, and found an extraordinary example of how tourism (even luxury) can marry environmental sustainability.

The Sense Experience Resort is an excellent model of recovery of Italian coastal complexes, it was in fact a former colony of Banca Cariplo, purchased by the Ficcanterri Group, which transformed the buildings and the 5 hectares of surrounding vegetation into an eco-friendly oasis, and has (among the first to do so in the area) installed a well that desalinates the sea water.

The group has skilfully preserved the shape and position of the original buildings, minimizing the environmental impact and has integrated the Mediterranean scrub and the natural beauty of the area as added value.

A green oasis of peace and well-being

During the design and construction of The Sense Experience Resort, the environmental restoration of the seafront dune systems was carried out, planting exclusively native plant species. To protect the hinterland from sea winds and the action of sand, a windbreak barrier was created using species already present in the area. Over 7,000 shrubs and perennials, belonging to 80 different species, were chosen for their resistance to salty winds and low water requirements.

Zero km water: water saving and desalination

One of the most innovative aspects of the resort is the production of drinking water from brackish water, the property has installed a well, which through a reverse osmosis process, takes sea water from a surface well and transforms it into fresh water. This process, supported by a photovoltaic system that covers electricity consumption, produces approximately 19,000,000 liters of water per year, satisfying over 90% of the structure’s water needs. The desalinated water is therefore used for irrigation of the pine forest and vegetation of the resort, as well as for the water in the rooms of the structure.

Additionally, the resort recovers rainwater and pool wastewater for irrigation, demonstrating a total commitment to responsible water management.

Environmental and social sustainability

Environmental and social sustainability are closely interconnected and mutually reinforcing, a fundamental principle for the Ficcanterri group, which manages the resort, among others. The group, in fact, adopts a series of corporate welfare policies for its employees, defined as “internal guests”, promoting a healthy and inclusive working environment.

Among these policies, the babysitting service represents a concrete support for parents who work in the structure, guaranteeing them peace of mind and flexibility. Furthermore, the possibility of choosing contracts with two days of rest per week is an innovative practice in the seasonal tourism sector, which generally does not offer such conditions.

The benefits offered to employees then include extra day off for birthday (even if it is August 14th, they assure us!), the free use of the bicycles made available by the structure, and the possibility of using the internal restaurant service even on days off.

These initiatives not only improve the quality of life of employees, but strengthen the relationship, creating a sense of belonging and mutual support.

The We Plant project

The Ficcanterri group created the We Plant project, with which it further demonstrates its commitment to sustainability, in fact in collaboration with the Municipality of Bibbona, the group planted thirty-seven trees in the municipal pine forest of Marina di Bibbona, an area unfortunately damaged by cochineal , a parasite that has devastated many coastal areas.

Each tree planted bears the name of an employee who has worked for the group for at least three years, a symbolic gesture that recognizes and celebrates their dedication. This project not only restores an important part of the local ecosystem, but also creates a tangible link between the area and the people who work there, further strengthening the sense of community and belonging.

Driven by the success of We Plant, the Ficcanterri group then extended the brand to all the resort’s sustainable initiatives.

Among these actions, we find the replacement of all courtesy kits with a refill system, the elimination of all forms of plastic, and the use of water in cans on the beach, cartons at the bar and glass in the restaurant.

Furthermore, as regards catering, only short supply chain raw materials, local products, compostable crockery and cutlery are used for the composting of kitchen food waste. Over 70% of the waste produced is separated and disposed of by type, amounting to approximately 63,000 kg per year.

The activities promoted by the resort

Likewise, The Sense Experience Resort offers activities in line with a philosophy open to protecting the surrounding environment. Bicycles are available at the hotel for short trips, offering a smart and sustainable way to explore the beautiful surrounding area.

Sensory paths are offered to visitors that explore the pine forest, the Mediterranean scrub, the dune vegetation and the gardens rich in biodiversity. The cycling routes up the hills, the seafront viewpoints, the vegetable therapy and the food and wine experiences enrich the resort’s offer, enhancing the local products and offering moments of deep connection with nature.

The Sense Experience Resort is not just a place to stay, but a concrete example of how tourism can be sustainable and respectful of the environment. A visit to this resort is a unique experience that combines luxury, well-being and a strong commitment to conservation of our Planet.
