«A healthy lifestyle is crucial»

COSENZA «Accurate diagnostic screening is essential to achieve an early diagnosis of prostate cancer, which has now become the most frequent neoplasm in the age group between 50 and 70 years. Our objective is, first of all, to support citizens with a work with clear social and beneficial implications, non-profit and completely free of charge. Secondly, to raise awareness, by completing a simple questionnaire and carrying out several sessions of free visits, on the fact that the Psa dosage is not enough to make an early diagnosis, but it is essential to carry out a rectal examination.” President Aira, Maria Brunella Stancatodoes not hesitate to describe herself as worried after the first of the many meetings organized on prevention.
«A cycle of urological visits benefiting 24 subjects with an average age between 48 and 80 years and with only 1 case of hereditary prostate cancer», explains the doctor Emilio De Giacomo who carried out visits to Cosenza last week. «Total PSA values ranged from a minimum of 0.23 ng to a maximum of 6.58 ng. Only 5 patients reported symptoms of lower urinary tract disorders, while 1 patient reported haemospermia which is ultimately the only symptom that can be related to prostate cancer. 18 patients had no subjective symptoms. In 24 cases the rectal examination was negative, while in only 1 case, aged 69 years, with a total PSA of 3.2 ng, the examination was positive for a suspicious area, for which it was recommended to carry out a multiparametric MRI which certainly, due to the high cost-benefit, it cannot be included in a diagnostic screening”, emerges from the processed data.
The president of the Calabria PGI Oil Consortium also participated in the Cosenza meeting, Massimino Magliocchi, co-protagonist of the laudable initiative. «At the end of the work we will report the definitive data and its usefulness with social, diagnostic, therapeutic findings and in terms of economic savings. We are satisfied with the outcome of the first meeting. Helping and informing about such an insidious pathology is an incentive for us to move forward and try to reach even more people”, confirms Stancato. «Getting the message across that adopting a healthy lifestyle can also be the right medicine to try to have an excellent quality of life. Preferring vegetable fats over animal fats, exercising, avoiding stress and perhaps dedicating yourself and dedicating a little of your time is good for your heart and soul.” Hence the appointment next Monday, April 22nd, in San Pietro in Guarano (CS). Anyone wishing to participate must write to: [email protected] and bring the PSA exam with them after completing the questionnaire indicated at this link.
