Three ski mountaineers were rescued in the Madonna di Campiglio area, in Trentino, after being overwhelmed by an avalanche between Malga Mondifrà and the Tre Sassi vent, at an altitude of 2200 metres. The alarm was raised on the afternoon of Sunday 11 February, when one of the three men of French nationality managed to call for help.

The alarm

The avalanche broke off around 1pm in Val Gelada, not far from Campo Carlo Magno. The large mass of snow overwhelmed the three tourists, but one of the hikers was only partially submerged, managing to call for help.

According to what was reconstructed by local newspapers, the man was called for help However, he would not have been able to precisely indicate his position in relation to the place of detachment.

The alarm

The mountain rescue helicopter left but was unable to reach the reporting area due to very poor visibility and he therefore returned to the valley.

Luckily for the three French tourists, two other ski mountaineers, members of the mountain rescue team, were in the same area as the avalanche and they were able to reach the man. After securing it, they went in search of the other two companions in the group, using Artva, the avalanche search device. One of the two was pulled out alert and the other unconscious, although he was breathing.

The rescue

The staff who arrived by land from the Tione and Campiglio stations, supported by the Sagf of the Guardia di Finanza, transported the hikers to the Santa Chiara hospital to subject them to further checks.

The mountain rescue dog teams, the Trento Emergenza helicopter and the Pelugo firefighters also arrived on site.

The searches continued through rescue operations, for exampleverify that there were no other people trapped under the snow besides the three already identified.

The hiker killed by the avalanche in Abruzzo

In mid-January, an avalanche caused the death of a 45-year-old hiker on Mount Sirente, in the Abruzzo Apennines.

The mass of snow overwhelmed five hikers, four of whom were rescued. According to what was reported by the ‘ANSA’ news agency, it was the members of the group themselves who raised the alarm by calling 118. A helicopter immediately left L’Aquila with technicians and doctors on board to carry out the rescue operations.
