“Today the Tuscany Region, despite being a large reality, is made up of 273 Municipalities, a very small number of Local Authorities, compared to other large Regions of Italy which have thousands of them but, it will be good to remember, also in view of the imminent Feast of Tuscany, given that today 20 November 2023 marks the 242nd anniversary of the establishment of the Communities by the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo (20 November 1781), that this institutional reorganization of Tuscany begins on 20 November 1781 with the reform of the Communities , carried out in the Lorraine period thanks to Pietro Leopoldo. This revolutionary and innovative reform for those times, still represents today a modern rationalization of the Local Government of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, already at that time fully European State, dividing the entire Territory into Local Institutions which constitute the basis from which the current modern Municipalities originated”.
