Matteo Frealdo he has come a long way in life. And he will do a lot more. But he won’t be alone. He will have at his side a small, large army composed – among others – of Vasco Rossi, Jovanotti, Piero Pelù, Red Canzian, Fabio Gallo and many Vicenza players of yesterday and today. Matthew is a 25 year old young man from Montecchio MaggioreAnd. He was born premature and is forced to stay in a wheelchair due to hypertonic tetraparesis. But far from feeling sorry for himself, he sings, plays basketball, works, goes to concerts and follows his beloved Lane.
Who is Matteo Frealdo: the story of a boy who doesn’t give up
«To call him stubborn is an understatement – says his father Massimo with a smile – he is… a beast. He never gives up». Music plays an important role in his life without pause. Since 2019 he has been attending Franco Tufano’s school (up to 6) and takes singing lessonsthanks to which he performed at the Arena Theater in Sandrigo, both as a soloist and with the choir.
The next event is scheduled for January 24th all 20.45. Sings with Diapason, Vasco Rossi’s cover band.

And we’re only at the beginning. Because (perhaps) Matteo is at his best when he attends concerts. He’s seen a lot of themfrom Vasco Rossi to Jovanotti passing through Ligabue, Toto, Kiss and Deep Purple «And I have to bring a change – says the father – because during concerts Matteo goes wildhalfway through the performance he is completely sweaty.” At the end of the concerts, he often had the opportunity to speak with the stars. And his story is astonishing. «Many singers have been interested in my condition and they proved to be very empathetic, from Pierò Pelù to Vasco… Ma the one I felt closest to was Jovanotti: he was sincerely attentive and eager to know my situation, he demonstrated exceptional sensitivity. The meeting with Red Canzian was also very nice: with him we spoke in dialect.”
Baskin and successes with the Karibu of Montecchio
And after music there is sport. Frealdo practices baskin (in which able-bodied people and people with disabilities play together) in the Karibu of Montecchio. The adventure began in 2017 at school (the Ceccato institute) and continues. In 2018 the Karibu won the regional title and in 2022 they placed second in Italy. «Thanks – underlines Matteo – goes to the manager Pierangelo Tezze».
The dream of a new job
About theCeccato instituteright there Frealdo successfully supported thefinal exam. For a period, he worked in the Fasp companydealing with the entry of warehouse and administration data. Then the company moved to Barberino and therefore at the moment the young man he is unemployed. «For January – explains the father, supported by his tenacious wife Regina – we were called by the Arzignano employment centrelet’s hope there are some positive results.” At the moment Matteo takes care of the membership for basketball and the Brendola sports club.
Lane in the heart: the great passion for Vicenza and its protagonists
And then there are friends, starting with former scouts. Without forgetting her granddaughter, little Alice. But above all we get to the football, Frealdo’s great passion, who is a “pillar” of the red and white club of Altavilla by Emanuele Sanson and Nicola Gonzato. Matteo follows all the internal competitions and also took part in some Vicenza away games. «I particularly appreciate Mister Gallo, who always comes to greet us in the disabled sector at the end of the match. I often go to watch training at Fellette and have a chat with the coach. I also get along well with the players, in particular with Gagno and Pellizzari. Among those of the recent past, number one is Filippo De Col, an extraordinary person, sent me to his stag party and then to his wedding. Also Pellegrini, Fausto Rossi and Laezza they are beautiful people.”
Cheering for the Montecchio women’s basketball team
In short, the Lane is in the heart of Matteo (despite the inconvenience caused by the limited capacity of the parking for disabled people at the Menti). Frealdo then supports the Montecchio women’s basketball team, «with my idol in mind, Victoria Maculan».
