New Year’s Eve, by definition, is a matter of synchronisms. Countdowns, connections, stages that light up at the same time. This year, however, what caused discussion was not a delay or an unscheduled event, but… the apparent ubiquity of The Kolorscapable of appearing first on television from Bari and then, just over an hour later, live at Palermo.
The televised performance took place during “New Year’s Eve in Music”, the long live broadcast on Canale 5 hosted by Federica Panicucci and Fabio Rovazziwith the stage set up in Piazza Libertà. The band led by Stash entered the scene around 10.30pmwhen the marathon had not yet entered its climax.
After midnight, however, The Kolors performed in Palermoon the stage of the municipal concert in Piazza Ruggero Settimo, in front of the Politeama. An announced presence, long included in the city’s official program, which has inevitably drawn attention to a logistical detail that is difficult to ignore: the distance between the two cities and the technical times needed to cover it.
Suspicion of a time inconsistency quickly began to circulate online. Not so much as an accusation, but as a collective exercise of verification: direct or recorded? All live or only partially? In an age where audiences compare schedules, clips and images in real time, the coherence of television storytelling becomes an integral part of the show.
The explanation came off the air. The Kolors’ performance in Bari, it was later learned, was not broadcast in real time, but recorded around 9pm and subsequently inserted into the television schedule. A technical solution that allowed the band to respect both commitments without pushing the limits of what was possible.
No deception, therefore, and no substantial anomaly. Rather, the normal functioning of a complex machine such as that of major New Year’s events, where artistic needs are intertwined with television ones. Some performances remain strictly live, others are adapted to the needs of the production.
