«In Reggio Emilia rooms up to 1,190 euros. Even private individuals put their apartments online.” What’s happening

The announcement of the concert was enough Kanye Westscheduled for Saturday 18 July at the RCF Arena in Reggio Emiliato transform the city into a privileged observatory of economic dynamics, last minute speculation and unexpected opportunities. Hotel and apartment rates have soared to unprecedented levels, while residents are literally leaving their homes to rent to fans arriving from across Europe.

According to the research simulations cited by Il Resto del Carlino, near the concert location there are rooms for up to 800 euros per night on Booking and even 1,190 euros on Airbnb. However, more than half of the available accommodations exceed 500 euros, a sign that demand has overwhelmed the market in just a few days. Many facilities, in the meantime, are already sold-out.

Behind the numbers, the first background stories emerge: not only tourist operators and professional hosts, but even families and private individuals are putting their apartments online exclusively for the concert weekendbetween 17 and 20 July.

In several cases – local sources say – these are houses not normally intended for short-term rentals, made available only to take advantage of the event. For some landlords, the opportunity is as good as a traditional month’s lease.

The economic driving force appears significant: catering, transport, venues and services are preparing a “big event economy” style welcome, aware that the related industries will not stop at just the live nights. At the same time, however, the debate on the boundaries between opportunity and speculation is growing.

In fact, the concert is not only affected by the question of prices. Kanye West’s presence in Italy continues to fuel controversy linked to his public outings and anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi declarations expressed in recent years. The ANPI of Reggio Emilia expressed “strong concern and opposition” to the decision of the managers of the area to host the artist, defining his messages as “incompatible with the founding values of the Constitution”. Despite the protests, the event currently remains confirmed. The forecasts speak of over 100 thousand spectators: a river of people, an endurance test for the city and a phenomenon which, already today, tells a lot about how large musical events can redesign – in the space of a few hours – urban economy, tourism and public perception.
