Nicola Scichilone, director of the complex Pneumology operational unit of the “Paolo Giaccone” Polyclinic and director of the University’s School of Specialization in Respiratory System Diseases, has been elected national president of the Italian Society of Pneumology (SIP). The newly elected member will assume office in 2027.
It is the first time that a specialist from Palermo has been called to lead the scientific society, a point of reference in the field of respiratory medicine for national, regional and local authorities. Sip actively collaborates with the Ministry of Health, the Regions, health companies and the main public health institutions for the definition and dissemination of guidelines dedicated to the management of respiratory diseases, from a highly interdisciplinary perspective.
The Society has over 1,700 members, respiratory medicine professionals working in university, hospital and local areas. Professor Scichilone is the author of over 340 scientific articles in full published in international journals indexed with impact factor, as well as contributions in international and national journals. He has also edited textbook chapters and reference monographs in the pneumology sector.
“I welcome this appointment with enthusiasm and a deep sense of responsibility – states Scichilone – an expression of unanimous consensus on the part of the Italian pneumological community. I consider it above all a recognition for the university and hospital institutions of Palermo that I have the honor of representing. We will face the challenges of modern respiratory medicine with determination, with the aim of guaranteeing patients the best possible care and constant scientific updating for professionals, strengthening the comparison with the territory in a truly interdisciplinary perspective”.
The general director of the Polyclinic, Maria Grazia Furnari, congratulates him on his new role: “The election of Professor Scichilone to the national presidency of the Italian Society of Pneumology represents a result of great prestige for the Polyclinic and for the entire University of Palermo. It is the recognition of a scientific and professional path of the highest level and testifies to the quality of the clinical, healthcare and research activity developed in our company. On behalf of the strategic management, I extend the best wishes to the professor for his success in his work”.
