The consumption of electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products among young people is increasing but, internal medicine doctors warn, they exist serious health risksgive her inflammation of the respiratory tract up to DNA alterations.
This is the alarm raised by the Italian Society of Internal Medicine (Simi) regarding the spread of smoking among younger people.
«Unfortunately, the use of e-cigs and heated tobacco products is increasing at a worrying rate among young and teenagers, who are at risk of developing an addiction to nicotine and of then get closer to traditional smoking. Their use in very young people must be restricted by all means”, underlines Antonello Pietrangelo, past president of Simi.
As Simi points out, «the increase in smoking addiction leads to risks such asinflammation of the airways andincreased susceptibility to viral infections. Furthermore, although in a different way than traditional cigarettes, e-cigs and heated tobacco products contain chemicals capable of altering DNA and this could promote the appearance of tumors, years later. E-cig users also have a higher incidence of asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and worse symptoms than non-smokers. A fact that shatters the myth of the harmlessness of electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products».
