On December 29, 2013, the seven-time world champion suffered a serious head injury in a skiing accident in Meribel, France. Since then his family has not found peace amid continuous indiscretions and news events

Twelve years without Michael Schumacher. Or rather, without seeing him and without knowing how he really is after the terrible skiing accident on 29 December 2013 in Méribel, France, where the Formula 1 legend – seven world championships in his career, now 56 years old – suffered a serious head injury. Three days later he was operated on at the University Hospital of Grenoble. The following January 2, his press secretary, Sabine Kehm, stopped the medical updates. Since then only one has been published, in July 2014, announcing that Michael had come out of a coma and would be transferred to Lausanne. A few weeks later, the former Ferrari driver returned to the family home on the shores of Lake Geneva to be treated by a specialized team. From there the most total confidentiality.

The inner circle and the parable of the ex-agent

No official news, just a few statements from those who are part of the family’s inner circle, led by his wife Corinna, who has opted for absolute privacy. Very few can cross the gates of the villa on Lake Geneva, among them Ross Brawn (Schumacher’s engineer at Benetton and Ferrari), his boss in red Jean Todtthen the former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone and the former pilot Gerhard Berger, companion at Benetton and friend. Even to the former manager, Willi Weber, she was constantly denied the opportunity to visit Michael. The latter has not gone through a simple period: excluded from the recent wedding of Gina, Schumi’s daughter, he has repeatedly attacked Corinna, accusing her of preventing him from seeing his old client. As if that wasn’t enough, at the beginning of December, he was brutally attacked at home by a gang of robbers, who tied him up and beat him to make them reveal the codes to the safe.

«He is no longer the Michael we knew»

In recent months another well-known face from the paddock, Richard Hopkins (formerly head of operations at Red Bull and before that at McLaren), revealed that Schumacher «he has a personal Finnish doctor» but also raised serious doubts: «I don’t think we’ll ever see Michael again. I feel a little uncomfortable talking about his condition, due to the secrecy that the family, for the right reasons, wants to maintain.” According to the “speculations” of various doctors over the years, the former pilot he would no longer be able to speak or walk after the terrible accident. «This is not the Michael we knew»Jean Todt’s parroon.

The helmet signed with the help of his wife

Last April Sir Jackie Stewartthe oldest living world champion at 86 years old and three-time world champion, had auctioned a helmet on the occasion of the Bahrain GP to fight dementia. Among the autographs also that of Schumacher: «It is wonderful that he was able to sign the helmet for this good cause, a disease for which there is no cure», his words. Then, later, he revealed the truth to the Daily Mail: “His wife Corinna helped him”. Another person who talked about Schumacher is Felix Gorner, RTL journalist, who maintains some contact with the family. «The situation is very sad. He needs constant care and is completely dependent on his caregivers. Currently it can be approached by a maximum of 20 people.”

Blackmail, extortion and trials

But what disturbs the Schumacher family’s days is not only the “profiteering” about Michael’s health conditions, but also news events. From the blackmail and extortion attempts that led to the conviction of some former collaborators in Germany – including a bodyguard – to the accusations of a nurse, complete with trial, who worked in the German’s healthcare staffwho claims to have been raped in the villa in Gland. The facts date back to 2019. The woman accused Joey Mawsonun, a thirty-year-old driver who was a friend of Mick Schumacher at the time (now the two have no longer been in contact for a long time). The Schumacher family is in no way involved or under investigation. He just wants some peace after 12 years of pain.
