A year of great farewells, from cinema to politics, but also for sport, entertainment, fashion, culture: 2025 has brought with it many illustrious deaths, which have shaken public opinion not only in Italy, but also in the rest of the world. Starting from that of Pope Francis (17 December 1936 – 21 April 2025), who passed away in the Jubilee year, on Easter Monday, after several hospitalizations. A turning point of the year not only for all believers, but also for society, politics and institutions.
The last one to leave, among the most famous people, was Brigitte Bardot (September 28, 1934 – December 28, 2025), but the cinema this year has paid an important toll: among others, the visionary director and screenwriter passed away in January David Lynch (January 20, 1946 – January 16, 2025), followed less than a month later by Gene Hackman (30 January 1930 – 18 February 2025), the ‘bad lion of Hollywood’, who died in dramatic circumstances with his wife, in their villa in New Mexico. Also breaking into the news was the tragic death of Rob Reiner (6 March 1947 – 14 December 2025), the director of ‘When Harry Met Sally’, who also died together with his wife, but at the hands of his son, according to investigations.
‘Bramble Birds’, but not only that, is the television series for which he will be remembered Richard Chamberlain (31 March 1934 – 29 March 2025), known to all as ‘Father Ralph’. A few days after he leaves Val Kilmer (31 December 1959 – 1 April 2025), among the ‘beautiful and damned’ actors. But Hollywood always loses two legends in the autumn: the actor and director Robert Redford (18 August 1936 – 16 September 2025) passed away at the age of 89, three weeks later it was the turn of Diane Keaton (5 January 1946 – 11 October 2025), not only an actress but a style icon.
Another ‘great’ of cinema will pass away in 2025: Claudia Cardinale (15 April 1938 – 23 September 2025). In Italy, the deaths of Adriana Asti (30 April 1931 – 31 July 2025) and of Remo Girone (1 December 1948 -3 October 2025).
The world of literature However, the Peruvian writer and 2010 Nobel Prize winner lost Mario Vargas Llosa (28 March 1936 – 13 April 2025), but also mourned the untimely death of the British best-selling author Sophie Kinsella (12 December 1969 – 10 December 2025) and the author of Bar Sport and The Celestine Company Stefano Benni (12 August 1947 – 9 September 2025), died at the age of 78 after a long illness.

The modaItalian and not only, mourned their ‘King’, the stylist Giorgio Armani (1 July 1934 – 4 September 2025), but also the death of Rosita Missoni (20 November 1931 – 2 January 2025), who with her husband Ottavio had founded the Italian knitwear company of the same name, and the premature death of Cesare Paciotti (1 January 1956 – 12 October 2025), also a symbol of Made in Italy in the footwear sector.

Finally, last but not least, it sport: the Italian tennis champion has passed away Nicola Pietrangeli (11 September 1933-1 December 2025), that of boxing Nino Welcome (26 April 1938 – 20 May 2025), a discipline that the American also lost George Edward Foremanone of the ring’s most iconic boxers (January 10, 1949 – March 21, 2025).
