Prince Louis makes his royal debut at age 7

Despite the cliché phrase, in this case it is necessary to say it: it is really true that time passes. It seemed like yesterday that the Princes of Wales announced the arrival of their third child, he principle Louis. And instead, even the smallest of the Windsor family began to receive invitations to participate in real ones real commitments.

The proposal that came to the attention of the royal family was in line with Louis and his interests. No diplomatic commitment, after all the little prince is only seven years old anyway, but the offer to take on the role of patron of the World Horse Chestnut Championship (World Conker Championships). A reasoned invitation, especially after Kate Middleton’s revelation about it the passion that the principle has for chestnuts. Visiting the scout group on the occasion of Donald and Melania Trump’s visit, the Princess of Wales said that at home “you continue to find chestnuts in the wardrobes, in her bed, chestnuts everywhere”.

Despite Louis’ enjoyment of playing with the chestnuts and the appreciated invitation, according to William and Kate, for Louis it was not (yet) time for him to take on royal responsibilities.

The royal family’s support for the horse chestnut championship

I link between the royal family and the championship which takes place in West Sussex, in Southwick, precedes the invitation made to Prince Louis by years. As reported by Daily MailKing Charles would have supported the event so that it could continue to exist in the years to come.

Due to climate change and the consequent decrease in rainfall, last year’s harvest of horse chestnuts, the so-called conkerhas significantly decreased. The royal family therefore decided to send over 300 chestnuts to be made available to the organizing group.

This initiative, in fact, is not limited to activities halfway between play and competition. However, the original reason was to raise funds for blind people. As reported in Daily Mail John Burkettspokesperson for the World Conker Championships: “Like many other organizations of which members of the Royal Family are supporters, we have charitable objectives and, over the years, have raised around £450,000.”

But, therefore, do world championships in the chestnut game really exist?

The game consists of managing to destroy your opponent’s chestnut with another chestnut hanging by a thread, in a maximum of three attempts. To those who accuse this game of being too simple, Matt Cross, the ex-King Conker, counters that a great level of “precision” is required.

It all started in 1965, when a group of men decided to go fishing but, unable to proceed with the plan, started targeting horse chestnuts. By gradually refining his technique, he had created a real game for which he could compete in a world championship.

In the latest edition there were 256 participants from nine different countries, including Japan.

The tournament takes place every year on the second Sunday of October and crowns the winner as the Conker King or Queen. David Jankins currently holds the title.
