Bills, blow to the island’s SMEs: 147 million more costs than the EU average

In the first six months of 2025 alone, which is coming to an end, Sardinia’s micro, small and medium-sized enterprises paid 147 million euros more for electricity than the European average. An extra cost that affected the regional GDP by 0.38%.

The alarm was raised by a report created by the Research Office of Confartigianato Imprese Sardiniaon Eurostat, Arera and Terna data, which analyzed the electricity bills of small-sized companies on the island in the food, fashion, furniture, wood, metals and other manufacturing sectors, including jewelery and eyewear, comparing them with those of the same size in the rest of the 27 European nations.

«We need to re-establish balance and fairness in the cost of energy paid by companies – states Giacomo Meloni, President of Confartigianato Imprese Sardegna – these activities can no longer be considered an ATM».

«The high cost of energy slows down the competitiveness of small businesses – adds Meloni – we must first of all intervene to recalibrate the tax burden on the bills of the different sizes of entrepreneurs-users and which today penalizes micro, small and medium-sized companies forced to pay for large energy guzzlers. Our companies do not ask for privileges, but for clear and fair rules.”

The island ranks tenth in a national distribution opened by the highest extra cost detected in Lombardy with 1,021 million euros (18.9% of the total), equal to 0.22% of the region’s GDP, followed by Veneto with 563 million (10.4%), equal to 0.31% of the GDP, Emilia-Romagna with 496 million (9.2%), equal to 0.27% of the GDP and Puglia with 410 million (7.6%), equal to 0.47% of GDP (3rd highest weight among the regions).

At an island territorial level, the highest percentage impact on GDP is found in the province of Southern Sardinia with 0.42% and 25 million euros of extra costs compared to the EU. Followed by the province of Cagliari with 0.39% and 53 million euros, that of Nuoro with 0.37% and 17 million and that of Oristano with 0.36% and 11 million.
