End of the protected market, last days for the “old” electricity bills

The old regime of the protected market ends. Since July the rules have changed and the countdown concerns in particular “non-vulnerable” users who have not yet chosen an operator to rely on in the free electricity market. By June 30, “undecided” consumers will be transferred to the gradual protection service and will be contacted by a new supplier, who will inform them of the new service conditions, including economic ones.

A transition phase, which will last just under three years, from 1 July 2024 to 31 March 2027, during which each customer will be assigned to the seller selected by the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and the Environment (Arera) depending on the area where it is located: for Brescia and its province the assigned manager is Enelwhich won the public auction for our territory and other parts of Italy.

Also by this date, even those who now have a “free market” contract will be able to request to return to the protected market and then automatically move to the one with gradual protections. Nothing changes, however, for vulnerable domestic customers, including those over 75those who use electro-medical devices or live on non-interconnected islands, who will continue to be served in the enhanced protection service even after 1 July 2024.

The gradual protection service “has both economic and contractual advantages”, explains the president of the Consumerismo association Luigi Gabriele. For users who are included in this service «a saving in terms of money of 130 euros per year has been calculated. – adds Gabriele – Furthermore, in the gradual protection service the contract is determined by the conditions given by the authority, here no one can refuse to supply me, unlike the free market”.
