Davide Vagnati, DS of Turin, talks about his beginnings as a manager from Rimini, to the ‘Master shots’ event, on the sidelines of the opening of the transfer market: “I have always had passion. When I was a boy I played managerial games, I liked to build the teams. I have always had this nature. Then after the last season as a player, at 34, the president told me that I was talking too much in the field and I ran little … from there we started together and we did beautiful things, thanks also to a large working group“.
Is continuity important for a manager?
“It certainly has value. By working many years in a club you can determine in the long run. Then football goes fast and what you do within a month can change the month later, but giving managerial continuity can give results“.
The moment of Italian football?
“There are moments when talent is there and moments in which it is missing. They are historical phases also linked to luck and situations. I think of Turin who has an important story in forming and launching players: this year we made many guys play in the first team and this is important. I think young people are good if they are thrown into, because a fresh player gives you something more, sporty and level of the heritage of the club. Young Italians at this moment have difficult costs to manage, especially for an average club“.
How do you choose a young man?
“The great difficulty is now also finding young players who live everything in a professional way. I want to see footballers who give everything, then you can lose, win or make mistakes, but the difference makes the attitude. The young man has the chance to earn her, in training the expert player if he sees a young man with the right attitude helps him, otherwise not. I am trying to take players with the right attitude, who wants to get to the maximum of his possibilities“.
Last blow and the biggest pride of the career?
“Talking about missed blows is hard … I would have liked to take Harder from Sporting Lisbon let’s say. For the other question I don’t say anything, the skill is the daughter of many things: I am lucky enough to have an important president who teaches us so much every day. I like to work, I am proud to have made the lowest categories they taught me so much“.
